It is the home of the relatively primitive Aranek species, who call themselves the Sultanate of Zaa'nabar. It has 1 ocean, and a few scattered oases, as well as fertile ground in its vast mountain ranges. Resources: Metals scattered across desert, minor agricultural capacity. Yirridium asteroid belt. Strategic Importance: An alien relic of unknown capabilities.

The space around GX9-11 ripples as multiple tears into subspace form. A substantial "fleet" emerges, 6 ships of unknown configuration. They are solidly black, each one to two miles in length, and end in sharp points. They produce minimal energy signatures, save for a powerful psionic wave that can be felt as far as the surface of the planet.
The fleet's organic engines bring it closer to the planet, and each ship moves on a different trajectory, to cover a different section of the surface.
[OOC]: Remember, the Aranek lack sophisticated communication, and the Mass is difficult to detect with scanners. It's unlikely any empire would even be aware of this attack besides the Sultanate.

The dark ships finally reach their positions, halting in geosynchronous orbit. Their undersides come to life as hundreds, perhaps thousands, of spheres are launched in varying directions at the planet's surface. The meteors strike the sands and mountains indiscriminately, causing damage to surface structures and even killing some wildlife in the process.
Inside the smoking impact craters, the spheres crack open like eggs, releasing the airborne contagion. The infection of GX9-11 has begun.

Reptilian eyes fall upon the falling meteors, and some go out to investigate, suspecting the foul play of Sector 7.

Observers on the ground may spy large, narrow, conical shapes drifting across the sky. At the impact sites, any unprotected life forms quickly become host to the microscopic Mass organisms. For now, there are no visible signs of infection.

One group of former freedom fighters mount up in their VTOL technical, armed with their primitive weapons, their bodies bouncing up and down haphazardly as it speeds off to investigate.

The VTOL arrives at the site of one of the "meteors". Inside of a large crater sits a spherical, solidly black shape. Closer inspection would reveal that it has cracked and split open, and inside is a shiny goo of some sort. It appears to be moving.
Across the planet, the Mass accelerates the process of infection. The carbon-based life of GX9-11 proves easy to adapt to, and some animals would already begin to feel the onset of sickness.

It has been some weeks since the initial appearance of Mass vessels in orbit around the planet GX9-11. No signals emanate from its surface, and there are no signs of its native life, intelligent or otherwise. Deep in the mountains, on the highest summit, grows a solitary black spire.

The Monolith in the mountains of GX9-11 springs to life as three ships launch themselves from it, to join those still in orbit. All ships form up, surging with energy as they open hyperspace rifts. The fleet disappears, leaving the planet in solitude.
A second spire grows deep in the desert, where for miles the yellow sands are stained by an inky blotch...

The second monolith is completed, and at the top a single growth begins forming.

An object leaps from hyperspace, gliding at high speed in the dark space. It vanishes from sensor data as it drifts towards the planet.

The growth of the ship accelerates. Scanners would indicate a surge of energy within the newer spire. The other also experiences an energy spike, but far less pronounced.
The object continues in towards the planet, it glides in and adjusts its course for a flyby of the planet using jets of released carbon dioxide. Special pads on the edges of the vessel shimmer and reflect some light momentarily on the side of the vessel as it scans the planet and forces around it.
Once acceptable data is retrieved, the vessel lights up full afterburner. The engines of the craft propelling it at incredible speeds in just a couple seconds. The ship becomes a blip for sensors as its cloaking method dissolves with the sudden heat spike, its hull seems to change its texture before veering off course and away from the planet.

The ship continues to grow, while the spire supporting it expends huge amounts of power. It seems to be growing unstable, swaying in the wind.

In the distant dark space from the planet, two hyperspace windows flash and close quickly. Two Aturor cruisers power sublight engines and head for the planet. The ships begin to gather data on their approach while emitting high power levels.

The tower in the desert continues to put off large amounts of energy, until it suddenly cracks apart and collapses. Amidst the hundreds of fragments, dozens of larger chunks, each a good 20 meters in length, engage engines and thrust themselves into orbit, where a single hyperspace window is forming.
The tower on the mountain begins undergoing a similar energy buildup as the Aturor cruisers draw near.
The stealth craft whirls around on a dime in the direction of Bihbulba and bolts through a hyperspace window. Sensitive arrays pick up a thermonuclear detonation nearby.
The two cruisers maintain a direct course with the planet, the front of the vessels appears to gloss over as the cells of the ship reconfigure their arrangement. Their sensory pads seem to flicker as they continue to read the planet and Mass fragments. They drop from assault speed just outside of the "battle zone" of the planet. They wait.
The chunks flow into the hyperspace portal, and for a brief moment a much larger ship is revealed, hidden by the swarm of others. Within a few minutes, barring interruptions, the ships disappear into hyperspace, and with them, the anomalous energy readings.
The last remaining tower continues building energy, and seems likely to do the same thing as the other.

Over the two cruisers rips open a new hyperspace window, a Aturor battleship crawls through slowly. It radiates a high energy reading as it comes to a stop. The cruisers form up on its flanks forming a spearhead.
The assembled assault formation engages sublight engines, closing for attack patterns over the second Mass structure.

Pads on the front and bottom of the vessels shimmer as they charge with energy. The spearhead fleet levels out for bombardment orbit and discharges high intensity energy bolts in a suppression volley without any pause in their attack. The pads fire in a left-right fashion, one after another with only a second delay between each discharge.
The battleship scans the planet, powerful sensors taking readings on the Mass tower and looking for anomalies.
The giant tower is pelted by energy bolts that scorch large sections of it. It begins to sway and seems ready to collapse. Energy levels inside of the tower begin to spike, and pieces of it start falling off. The energy weapons continue hammering it as it falls to pieces, raining down on the barren planet below. Some of the pieces accelerate into space, leaving the falling tower behind. The projectiles strike many of these as well. More pieces splinter off, and a much larger one can be seen among them, the source of the sudden energy levels. It, too, launches itself skyward, right at the aggressors.
