- Cartel charged with mine murders; City in an uproar
Date: Saturday, April 21, 790 MoP Author:Mathew Wainwright In a move that was not entirely unexpected, city watchmen have arrested Vedran Kestrel, "Khelim" of the local Quintana Cartel, and 5 other Cartel officials in a number of midnight raids on the 20th. Shortly thereafter, Watch officials stated that the Cartel is officially under investigation for their part in the recent mine massacre (see "Attack on the Mines Leaves a Hundred Dead", Arthur Turnbull, Heartlands Gazette) and that all Cartel assets have been seized, with all Cartel contracts being illegitimate as of today. Any mercenaries carrying out Cartel contracts will be considered brigands in offense of the Crown, and hung as such. Vedran Kestrel and other Cartel officials (Faiz Fakhri, Mostafa Saleem, Abbas Barakat, Mu'tasim Na'im Hakeem Ali, and Jamal Waheed Zaman) are expected to stand trial for mass murder.
Public response has been overwhelmingly negative. Independent merchants throughout the city have condemned the move and it's impact on trade and commerce, which is, in the words of one merchant, "Already being strangled by the restrictive terms of the Goblin Treaty." Indeed, since the signing of the Treaty, unemployment has skyrocketed. Most of these workers place the blame squarely on the Goblin Tribes, citing the restrictive terms that have eliminated resource-gathering operations which had previously employed hundreds of citizens, and which promised to employ hundreds more.
Quintana Cartel Representative Fareed Abii had this to say : "We condemn these baseless arrests and unlawful actions taken against the Quintana Cartel; but, in the name of respect for the law of Sanctimonia and Surna itself, we cannot and will not take any violent action to defend ourselves. Instead we call upon the virtuous of Surna to defend our honor in dealings. We implore any self-respecting merchants to ignore the order to illegitimate the Cartel, and to continue trading with them. We also ask that the people of Surna, you who have lost your livings because of the Goblins, perhaps even loved ones, to make your displeasure known. Let your government know you will no longer permit the cowardly appeasing of the Goblin aggressors."
Indeed, many view the arrests as just that. While the Watch has not yet responded to this claim, merchants and working-class citizens alike have responded to Quintana's call for action. At least six high-profile merchants have announced their solidarity with the Cartel, and have refused to recognize the seizure of Cartel assets; and around a dozen working-class citizens gathered around the Watch-house, protesting the arrests. These protesters were forcefully dispersed, but much of the sentiment still remains.
UPDATE: Reports indicate that Fareed Abii has been arrested for libel. Only time will tell what effect this has on the growing anti-goblin sentiment.
UPDATE: I have now just received news that a number of high-profile merchants, refusing to recognize the seizure of Cartel assets, have been arrested on charges of "criminal non-compliance" and "illegal dealings". Both a number of independent merchants and the Craft's Guild have condemned this move.
UPDATE: Further development; a reliable source has revealed that the Watch has just arrested Vorn Tyrr, administrator of the local Heartlands Crafts Guild, at noon today, on charges of "criminal negligence". One must wonder if the claims of "Goblin Appeasement" are untrue, given Tyrr's less-than-positive reputation among the Gobin Tribes. Merchants and citizens alike responded in outrage with a mass demonstration today, with a burning of Watch Commander David Halberry in effigy.
OOC: yup
