| Maalik, Land of Magic- Spoiler:
"Maalik is a peninsula protruding from the deep jungle of inner Sarkun, dotted by fortified, reclusive city-states ruled by the exiled Mage-Clans of Sida. Designed as magocracies, magical prowess is directly linked to social status." - The World of Aeria Origins
- Spoiler:
Many centuries ago, back when the Caliph sat atop his throne and overlooked all of Sida. A renaissance of the magical arts was blooming it's way across the great Sidan Desert. Aristocratic nobles quickly caught onto the art and held strong. Of course with power comes responsibility, which the aristocracy had little. They misused their power for personal gain, and summoned demons to plague Sida and earn themselves power. Then people Sida took up arms against the mage-kings in an atrocious crusade, and purged the deserts of the mage-clans. The exiled mages set sail for the slave-gathering ports of Sarkun and quickly gained control over the populace. Struggles between the clans ensued and they went their separate ways, settling their own city-states within the land the now call Maalik.
Culture
- Spoiler:
Maalik culture is very much similar to that of Sida, however the Maalikites have very few morals and often summon, make deals with, and often fraternize with demons and the like. Every aspect of magic is open to the Maalikites who have no morals. Gaining power through any means necessary. Being heavily mageo-centric, one's social standing depends on two factors, magical prowess and reputation. Therefore those who are much more magically adept will rule over those who have no magical ability. Slavery is a common aspect of everyday life, and a common sight to behold are the slave markets in the larger cities. Nearly no laws exist except those of survival of the fittest, and subordination to those of higher social status.
Social status also relies heavily on who you kill and who's ass you kiss. Usually unfriendly to those below and them and often hostile to those who can not use magic. The Maalikites favor mage brawls, contests where magical prowess is tested by hurling volleys of magic spells at each other and seeing who survives, often shown in arenas where roaring fans block out the sounds of agony from the loser.
Formal education begins around age six, learning the basics of everyday life, that is, reading, writing, and arithmetic. One's formal training in the art of magic begins around twelve in the Arcaneum, twelve being the age where the sacred field is developed enough to allow the use of magic, and proceeds through age twenty. Once the formal education is completed, a two part exam takes place, this exam determines the social status of a newly educated adult. Those who show little magical prowess after the education process is complete are forced into slavery.
The first part of the exams is written, involving sigilium to write specific scrolls. The scrolls are examined by master inscriptors and the bottom fourty percent of this exam are rejected by the state and sent back to the city-state of their birthright. The second part of the exams is a mage brawl, three on three matches, with no restrictions on magic. Possibly the most gruesome event in the exams, the survivors are rewarded with their state certification and then pressed into military service for their city-state.
In accordance with the new decrees set up by the unification of Maalik, the old exit exams have been done away with and the new exam consists to choose those who are better suited for military life and those who are suited for common life, those passing with high-marks on the combat-oriented part of the test will be pressed into military service for their state's required number and those who do not will be pressed into the common population.
Military service varies from each city-state.
Rashid | Ten years | Atiya | Five years | Qadir | Ten years | Muhsin | Five years | Safiyyah | Five years | Fadilla | Five years | Aqil | Five years |
The Arcaneum
- Spoiler:
The Arcaneum is a grand complex built in the center of the five greater city-states. The most prestigious academy of magic in the known world. The Arcaneum is a place of relative peace in Maalik. Closing itself off from warring city-states to help unify the Maalikites into one nation.
Every year on the twelfth of December, procurers of the academy open portals to all the known settlements (excluding Atiya, the vampire state, as vampires can not reproduce), all children of twelve to thirteen years of age are transported to the academy for their formal education in magic. They receive accommodations in the 'A Group' dormitories, and are given the new-arrivals' exam to determine their star ranking, which determines their wealth to the academy, and the benefits they receive thereof. To discern the star ranks, the students wear small gold stars on the collars of their uniforms. Star ranks are as follows.
- No Stars
Those who perform poorly on the new arrivals' exam are denied star ranking, their dormitory rooms are dimly lit, cramped, and poorly heated and ventilated, these students also receive the smallest meals.
- One Star
Those showing some promise, yet little natural ability, are designated the one-star rank. With dormitory rooms that are drastically better than the No Stars', being of decent size, lit well, and fairly heated and ventilated, whilst their meals are only improved by a small margin.
- Two Stars
Showing a good deal of natural talent with magic, and a great amount of promise, are the two-stars. Hosting large dormitory rooms that are superbly lit, heated, and ventilated. Their meals are drastically better than One Stars and No Stars.
- Three Stars or 'Specials'
Reserved ranking for the plane-touched, these students do not live in dormitories, but rather in a large mansion, dedicated to housing the 'Specials'. Their meals are grandiose, containing fine cuisine from all around Aeria.
In addition to the star rankings, the students are also divided in accordance to age. There are four groups, 'A Group' consisting of 12-14 year olds, 'B Group' consisting of 14-17 year olds, and 'C Group' consisting of 17-20 year olds, and 'D Group' consisting of students older than 20 who have either come to Maalik to hone their magic, or those returning to the academy to further practice their art. A star-advancement test can be taken after joining a new age group in order to accurately track students' progress. Each age group has its own dormitories, and academic facilities, sharing a common courtyard in the center of the Arcaneum where students of varying age groups may mingle.
During their time in 'A Group' students receive a basic education in all forms of magic, allowing them to make a decision on which field to study later on. This is a very hands-on stage in their education, not requiring much classroom time. Towards the end of their time in 'A Group' the students will choose the field they wish to join during the rest of their years at the college.
'B Group' students are more divided, each field having its own teachers and classrooms. Students begin to receive a basic training in the understanding, history, and mechanics of magic, whilst learning skills in the field of magic which they have chosen.
'C Group' students spend their final years practicing together, honing their skills in mage brawls, learning how to hone their magical prowess in battle. They receive a more classroom environment education and go in depth with how magic and the weave work. At the end of their C Group education, they take the aforementioned Exit Exam that determines their social status.
'D Group' consists of much older students, and is mostly a personal education, without the need for a proper educational building, D Groups can be found in the massive library that the Arcaneum houses, learning new tricks and techniques to further develop their prowess. Students from D Group that are two or three star students are sometimes recruited to teach at the Arcaneum.
Every year a council of professors gather and choose ten foreigners who show great promise with the grand art, and recruit them to join the college, these students are housed and taught in a special grove known as the Foreigners' Garden. A renaming process involving the official changing of the surname to Ajam, meaning 'Foreigner'. These are elite students and often enroll as teachers at the Arcaneum.
Of Treaties and Squabbles
- Spoiler:
Rashid Holding the massive crypt system it does, Rashid is naturally a great place to practice necromancy. However, the added emphasis on necromancy in the city-state has earned itself an ominous repuatation with the Concordic Kingdoms, The Sultanates of Sida, and the Occitan States.Of particular note, the Clerical College has been known to send agents frequently to Rashid in an attempt to discourage the dark art by putting down known practitioners.
Rashid is primarily jungle, and the ancient homeland of the Aranek people. In recent years, the Rashidites have pressed for the removal of the Aranek tribes from their land. In a similar case, the Ha'drii are also persecuted by the Rashidites and a mass-genocide of the race has been put into effect following the recent issues loggers have been facing.
Rashid has no ongoing wars with the other city-states, however, following the rise of Lady Cassandra's rule over the people of Safiyyah, Rashid has been anxious, expecting a crusade to arise from the new Ilmatyr-centered religion.
Atiya The city-state of Atiya is one that shrouds itself in mystery. Little contact to the city-state has been made since it became a haven for the Sharite vampires. As with Rashid, the city-state has recieved attention from the various nations who have made Shar their enemy. However, due to the density of vampires that live within the city walls, little effort has been made to combat the threat.
Without their neighbors posing any hatred for the nation, Atiya's religious fervor is directed at Sida and Sanctimonia, however due to the lack of contact with the reluctant city-state, little is known as to their preparations for war. Without the worry of being cut off from the Arcaneum, Atiya is definately distrusted amongst the city-states.
Qadir [i]As with many other of the states of Maalik, Qadir is scorned by the international community for practicing the dark arts. There are several small groups around the world who operate to kill demons, and a handful of these actively operate in Qadir as a kind of 'Robin Hood' recollecting taxes and dispersing them amongst the populace.
Between the other city-states, Qadir doesn't have much value, and many stay away from Qadir to keep themselves from the taxation.
Muhsin Muhsin receives international attention, not for it's practice of the dark arts, but rather for their exploitation of slave labour to mine and produce gold for the state. As with Qadir, a few smal groups work to free slaves from their captors, but ultimately fail due to the nontraditional form of control used on them.
Between the city-states, Muhsin one of the more, if not the most, envied of the city-states, due to its location atop a large gold deposit, Muhsin has been the stage for several previous campaigns amongst the states, but in this new age, pressing for the unification of Maalik, Muhsin stands strong against the concept. In order to support a unified Maalik, Muhsin will need to change its views, either willingly or through force.
Safiyyah Safiyyah is a very poor state, with nothing going on that is viewed negatively by the international community. In fact, the new arrival of Lady Cassandra is viewed as a step toward Concordism to some. However, she is regarded by some as the 'New Prophet' and fear that she will misuse her religious standing.
Amongst the city-states, Safiyyah has little monetary wealth, and thus very little wealth amongst them. Lady Cassandra is a major figure in the push for a unified Maalik.
Fadilla Well known to eccentric nobles, Fadilla is Maalik's leader in exports. Primarily of golems used for civilian life, those resembling horses, birds, and large fish all used for transportation, as well as golems for combat and personal guard. Fadilla is keep in good standing with the majority of the world.
Amongst the city-states, Fadilla is viewed as both great and disgraceful, acting on their expertise with golems to turn a profit, yet disgracing the name of magic by spreading it amongst those who are inferior.
Aqil Aqil is the least known of the city-states, not truly being a state. With little magic populace whatsoever, it is often looked over by the international community.
Amongst the city-states, Aqil will be key in a unified Maalik and Chairman Essa works closely with Lady Cassandra to organize the new Maalik.
The Unification After years of pressing for a unified Maalik, the heads of state were finally brought together under one common banner by a mysterious tiefling male. Bringing down the tyrants of Muhsin and freeing the slaves of the state, the tiefling forged the way for the common nation of Maalik, a new federation being forged from the ashes of a backwards culture. Still upholding the ideals of the old ways, the original Maalikites continue to judge themselves and each other on their prowess in magic. However, with the flood of slaves being driven into the common population we expect to see an integration of mages and commoners within modern society. Slavery has been abolished amongst the states, however segregation has been put into effect as non-magic users have been given the same standing as those with magical ability.
As for the heads of state, in accordance with the Rebellion at Muhsin, the new capital of the Federation is claimed to be the war-torn city-state whose rulers had been dethroned by the tiefling's forces. Whilst maintaining each state's autonomy the new federation is hereby dubbed the United Provinces of Maalik. Each city-state continuing to govern their own self whilst being watched over by the new high order, headed by the tiefling. The Arcaneum standing tall within the centre of the city-states still serves as the premier college for magic and determiner of social-class amongst the states.
As for the Foreigner's Garden, it is expected to be expanded on to accompany the larger surges of recruited young children to hone their talents at the academy. The monstrous graduation exams have now been abolished and all students will receive a full education at the college regardless of talent. Changing the Exit Exams to be more classroom based. The ranking systems are still in place and the discrimination against the ranks will continue as tradition of the college is upheld to an extent. New dormitories and classrooms are to be built for the students who were once considered unworthy of passing on now receive a full education in magic.
This is truly the beginning of a new era in the history of Sarkun and of Aeria.
RP Notes
- Spoiler:
- Make sure to refer to the military service chart of the minimum age of your character, if he/she passed the exams. (Add twenty to the years of military service. - Characters from this region are almost exclusively human. With a few tieflings and álfar thrown in the general populace. However, it will be much easier to pass through approval as a human. - Your character will be ruthless, as a result of living nearly thirty years in an almost lawless region of the world, he/she will not have very many morals, if any at all. - Your character will scorn the 'inferior' people. (Those without magical ability.) *** Refer to the city-state RP Notes for unique city-state traits. ***
City-States
Rashid
- Spoiler:
One of the many alleyways that wind through Rashid. If a city on a hill is one to make an example of, then Rashid is a city in a valley, surrounded by mountains. Theft and banditry run rampant in the areas around Rashid, whilst inside the city the corrupt prince, Sulaiman Perish IX rules the populace as a puppeteer over his puppets. The only feature worth noting of Rashid is the city's massive cemetery and crypt system, which make Rashid a popular destination for necromancers.
There are many outlying towns which are responsible for supplying Rashid with lumber and many products from trees like turpentine, pitch, and even latex.
Founded in the center of a large expanse of jungle, Rashid has been known to clash often with the reptilian Aranek causing a severe cultural disdain for the primitive species, often leading the in small scale wars against the native peoples of Sarkun. The Ha'drii too, are often persecuted by the Rashidites, rumoured to be parasites, causing a recent plague on the jungles surrounding Rashid. Leading to a large effort for the genocide of the Ha'drii race in the lands claimed by the peoples of Maalik.
- RP Notes - Rashid wrote:
- *** Refer to the RP Notes section of this page for general traits. ***
- Characters from this area will be more inclined to necromancy than those of other areas, not to say they cannot pursue other fields, but if one was to study necromancy here it would open more possibilities (Take note that necromancy is ILLEGAL in Surna.)
Atiya
- Spoiler:
Thana Jalila standing atop the Black Cathedral. Whilst much of Maalik believe in nothing but their own power, the denizens of Atiya have constructed a mighty cathedral that reaches far into the sky, the Black Cathedral, as it is known, is the single largest monument to Shar in the known world. Atiya has become a safe-haven for vampires who arrive in droves to worship the Goddess of Darkness, and receive guidance from her beloved prophet, Thana Jalila.
A few human towns exist outside of the main city, which is predominantly populated by vampires. These towns serve as human 'farms' and as a feeding ground for the general populace.
Recieving divine guidance and magics from Shar, Thana Jalia rules over her city-state with a religious fervor. Blindly following Jalila, she uses them to fuel crusades against the followers of Aten, both in Sanctimonia and Sida. With belief that their immortality is a gift and should be acted upon, the Sharite vampires of Maalik take pride in developing their skills and using them in everyday life.
- RP Notes - Atiya wrote:
- *** Refer to the RP Notes section of this page for general traits. ***
- Atiya is a vampire settlement, and as such, any and all characters from Atiya are vampires. Mostly Sharite vampires. (Take note that being a vampire is ILLEGAL in Surna.) - In response to the first point here, you many be thinking, "But there are human farms here right?" Yes, but if a rancher's cow gets lost, the rancher is going to hunt it down, right? Same with the humans. There is no escaping the human farms.
Qadir
- Spoiler:
The city of Qadir atop the Falls of Tragedy Qadir sits atop a large line of waterfalls, known collectively as the Falls of Tragedy. So named because of the countless slaves and sailors who lost their lives sailing carelessly into the gripping currents that feed the Falls. Of particular note is the good Sir Saleem, summoner of demons who utilizes their influence. to collect harsh taxes from the lowly peasant folk, either paid in gold or blood.
A few outlying towns exist in the city-state, however these are all but exempt from the heavy taxation and demonic tax-collectors of Saleem.
With an ever growing tiefling population, Qadir has become a safe haven for persecuted tieflings, if there were ever a place tieflings could call their own, Qadir would be it. With non-tiefling races still out numbering the tiefling population by nearly twenty to one, Qadir is far from being the tiefling state many tieflings long to be a part of.
- RP Notes - Qadir wrote:
- *** Refer to the RP Notes section of this page for general traits. ***
- Demon summoning is a common art among the mages here, and communion with demons, a large tiefling population exists here, and as such, this is the most logical city-state for Maalik Tieflings to come from. (Take note that demon-summoning is ILLEGAL in Surna.) - If planning on having a tiefling from Maalik, Qadir would be the most logical birthplace.
Muhsin
- Spoiler:
The interior of the Grand Palace. By far the wealthiest city in all of Maalik as the city is built atop a large gold deposit, but it's not just gold that is in large quantities. Slaves are as well, with the slave to citizen population as high as fifty slaves for every citizen, to quell any thoughts of a slave rebellion, the cognimancers of Muhsin work twenty-four seven keeping the slaves focused on mining and processing gold. In the center of the city is a Grand Palace, the largest household in Maalik, with floors and walls of the finest ivory, where white robed aristocrats lounge in the parlour and speak badly of their many wives.
During the War for Muhsin, brought on by the unifying tiefling mage, Muhsin was declared the new capital of the new federation, the tiefling was put atop the throne and rules alongside the six other leaders of the city-states, acting as one unified Maalik.
There are a few outlying mining towns outside of Maalik as the deposit stretches for several hundred miles in any direction of the city center.
- RP Notes - Muhsin wrote:
- *** Refer to the RP Notes section of this page for general traits. ***
- Now, Muhsin is a complicated story, its very possible that you could be wealthy, but by Sanctimonian standards most immigrants are upper middle class. They will hold themselves very highly. - Polygamy is very much culturally acceptable in Muhsin, and is not illegal in Surna. But don't have more wives than you want PeriodRP and PerganancyRP.
Safiyyah
- Spoiler:
A small market place in Safiyyah. About as far to the other side of the spectrum from Muhsin as you can get, where even the wealthy elite live in what would be considered a poor merchant's homes, with few natural resources, beggars fight over the smallest rodents and peddlers sell flasks of false Distilled Luck potions to the common man for small concentrations of coin. As of late an Álfar by the name of Lady Cassandra has made her way into town, promising protection to all who follow her.
Safiyyah has many outlying slum towns where children rummage through trash piles and bathe in tainted water.
The Álfar, Lady Cassandra, known to be a grand vitamancer, has become a goddess to the people of Safiyyah, similar to Thana Jalia in Atiya, the people are in a religious fervor, praising Ilmatyr for their salvation. Little is known about the mysterious 'goddess' who makes Safiyyah her home, but those who have been blessed by her claim that her beauty is transfixing and often sicken themselves to see her.
- RP Notes - Safiyyah wrote:
- *** Refer to the RP Notes section of this page for general traits. ***
- Characters from Safiyyah are the humblest of all Maalik characters. Keep in mind when you arrive in Surna you will be dirt-poor.
Fadilla
- Spoiler:
An omniscient view of Fadilla. The metropolis of Fadilla, an industrial paradise ruled over by the engineer-prince, Naji Qusay XII. The town is predominantly consisting of enchanters who produce advanced golems and engineers who craft intriguing weaponry and the like using advanced engineering processes.
Unlike most of the city-states Fadilla has no outlying towns, the whole of the city-state is within the walls of this massive city.
Utilizing the least magery, and developing their technology further, the inventions of the Fadillites far outshine those of even Occitan. In recent years, a golem of Fadillite design, has been popular in allowing swift and safe transportation around the city. These golems are similar in appearance to large birds, allowing riders travel by air over large distances. These golems are often purchased by the wealthy elite all over Fadilla and the rest of Maalik.
- RP Notes - Fadilla wrote:
- *** Refer to the RP Notes section of this page for general traits. ***
- Fadillans are accustomed to engineering, and are less accustomed to magic than the other denizens of Maalik. While enchanting and the production of war-golems makes up the majority of magic in Fadilla.
Aqil
- Spoiler:
One of the many farms that make up the city-state of Aqil. The city-state of Aqil, while being the largest city-state holds no purpose other than that of producing food and distributing it to the other city-states. It has no definite center or leader, however it is almost universally agreed that Chairman Essa, head of the Farmer's Union of Maalik is the genuine figurehead for all of Aqil.
Little history surrounds Aqil, they are the more docile of the Maalik city-states, not truely having a government or common culture, the poor who can make the trek to Aqil for work bring with them the ideals of their own city-states, making Aqil the most diverse of all the states.
- RP Notes - Aqil wrote:
- *** Refer to the RP Notes section of this page for general traits. ***
- Characters from Aqil will be very rare, I would not expect anyone to produce a character from this region, they are mostly busy with tending the farms. If you do make a character they will be dirt-poor.

"Tirnan is a peninsula protruding from the deep jungle of inner Sarkun, dotted by fortified, reclusive city-states ruled by the exiled Mage-Clans of Sida. Designed as magocracies, magical prowess is directly linked to social status." That part has been in it since i join i think, we'll just say it brought itself to attention recently because no one talked about it.

He based it off one of the existing lands in the lore. Expanded and so on. So it has existed, though, not for eternity, obviously.
